If You Really do not Defend against Diabetes Now, You’ll Hate Yourself Later

This is a guest post presented by Patricia Harris.

Type 2 diabetes is easily the most common type of diabetes. Many Americans are identified as having diabetes type 2,and many more are unaware they're at high risk. Some groups have a higher risk for developing diabetes type 2 than others.Diabetes type 2 is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Indigenous Americans, and Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians as well as other Pacific Islanders, along with the aged people.

In diabetes type 2, either your body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is required to the body to be able to use glucose for energy. Any time you eat food, the entire body reduces all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood to the cells. When glucose increases in your blood rather then going into cells, it can result in diabetes complications.

You could have the power to improve and protect your wellbeing. With proper nutrition and physical exercise and by making good life style choices (like not smoking), you could feel better, stronger, and healthier, and can decrease your risk of diseases like cancer, diabetes, coronary disease and cerebrovascular accident.

What is a Healthy Weight?

There's a good way to learn if your current weight puts you at risk for developing serious diseases. Go to www.diabetes.org/bmi and consider the Body Mass Index (BMI) test. The outcomes will help you decide if you need to give consideration to your weight.

Better You Eat, Better You experience

Here are a few basic guidelines to help you and your family make healthier food decisions.
* Eat numerous vegetables and fruits.
* Choose whole fiber foods over processed grain products.
* Try brown rice as an alternative to white. Substitute brown bread bread for white.
* Eat fish 2 – 3 times weekly.
* Select leaner cuts of meat like those that end in "loin."
* Remove the skin from chicken and turkey.
* Eat non-fat dairy
* Drink water and calorie-free non-carbonated liquids.
* Use liquid oils for cooking as an alternative to solid fats.
* Lower high calorie snacks like chips, cookies, cakes, and regular frozen goodies.
* Look for baked chips and reduced calorie snacks. Or have a bit of fruit instead.
* Be careful about your serving sizes. Even a lot of "healthy" food could potentially cause extra weight.

Tips:
* Compare labels of similar foods, then opt for the one with smaller amounts of saturated fats, cholesterol and sodium.
* Adults should consume less than 2400 mg. of sodium everyday. If you have hypertension, it's best to aim for even less.
* Try adding seasonings in your own cooking to replace salt for enhancing flavor.

A bit of Workout Goes far away

Something that gets you up and moving will work for you. Here's what it can do:
* Lower your risk of developing diabetes type 2
* Lower your risk of heart disease and stroke Lower high blood pressure and cholesterol
* Reduce blood glucose (sugar) levels in case you have diabetes, that may decrease your risk of developing diabetes-related complications
* Relieve anxiety * Help you lose weight
* Offer you more energy
* Help you sleep better
* Build stronger bones and muscle mass

You do not need to visit a gym, play sports or use fancy equipment. Of course, you should discuss with a family doctor before starting any exercise program.

For those who have Diabetes.

Eating healthy and staying active are a lot more important when you've got diabetes.
Well-balanced meals may help keep your glucose (sugar) level as near to normal as possible.
Being active likewise helps you decrease your blood glucose. If you increase your physical activity levels, you could probably take less insulin or diabetes pills. In case you are very inactive, have heart disease or a history of foot ulcers, consult your doctor about safe exercise to suit your needs.Check your blood glucose before exercising. If it's under 100 mg/dl, eat some fruit, crackers or drink glass of milk or juice.Check it again after exercising to find out how your blood glucose responds to physical exercise. Bring a snack if you'll be active for a couple hour.

About me -Patricia Harris writes for the sample diabetic menu blog, her personal hobby website focused on tips to eat healthy in order to avoid and manage diabetes.

Occupation health issues occurs when you work more than 60 hours per week

If you often work more than 12 hours on weekdays and often return to work on Saturday and Sunday, perhaps you might need to take a look at the article below. “6 Serious Office Health Risks” is the article that I found lately that discuss about the problems that we might have if we tend to work long hours. Health issues like carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back pain, joint problems, eyestrain, bacteria and stress are some of the common problems that we face. As a blogger myself I do have couple of similar problems too. Due to long hours keeping in touch with my keyboard, I suffered wrist pain cause by ganglion cyst. I never did realize it until I feel a bump on my wrist. It appeared that I have been typing too much and over strain my wrist.

    Let’s discuss about how we work, especially if we are working in an office. Right from the moment that we sit on our chair with our desk and computer, we never stop staring at the monitor with hand on the keyboard. We won’t move our bottom unless we need to go for a meeting, get something to eat or drink, go toilet and go home after work. Imagine if you keep on repeating the same routine activities for years, what will happen? First of all your health might just be at stake. You’ll start to grow a fat tummy and feel tired easily.

    So what’s the best solution? Perhaps the best thing is prevent working for long hours. Practicing a balance between work and life is the best solution. Sadly not all occupation allows us to have that kind of luxury life style. That is why some jobs are highly paid not because of the professional but because of the sacrifices needed. We just have to choose wisely between money, health, family or career.

Check your Facebook privacy using Facebook Privacy Scanner

Previously I post about how easy it was Facebook personal information can be found. Here’s a website that I found enable users to check for their Facebook privacy settings. ReclaimPrivacy.org has a tool that enables users to scan for Facebook privacy settings. The instruction is simple. Just go to the website and there is a step by step instruction which will teach you how to run the checking. The website is trying to promote privacy awareness on Facebook. So you’ll find lots of information regarding the privacy policies on Facebook too.

P/S: Please use the tool at your own risk. I’m not sure if it’s safe or not but since it’s an open source code. It should be fine as it’s transparent.

Take care of your Facebook personal information

I read about 7 things to stop doing now on Facebook and it seems that facebook is not as secure as it seems. Well, if you really don’t want others to get to your personal information, the best way is not to upload it online. Once your information is online, there is no guarantee that the info will not leak out.

    Just how easy others can find your information online? Try doing a search with your name using Google search. If you type in your name exactly the same as you display your name in Facebook, you’ll find that your Facebook profile page will be listed. So if you have a friend that you haven’t contact or see each other for a long time, you might have a higher chance to find him within Facebook. That is if he or she registered an account on Facebook using the actual name.

    Facebook might be the best place to share your life with the people that you know and love, it also a place to leak your information to the world. That is if you are not careful with the information security.

The color combination used for design website and blog

If you’re a blog or website designer, I suppose you always faces the question of what color should I be using for the blog theme or website template. So just exactly how web or blog designer choose the right colors? It’s not just one color but a list of colors that suitable for website or blog. A blog theme or website template uses more than one color. One main color will be chosen and the rest of the colors surrounding the theme or template need to be match. That gives us a series or a range of colors. So the question is how do we get the best color combination? I suppose this has to do with finding the best color combination to make the blog theme or website template attractive and interesting. In other words, it’s more a less painting the scenery with the right colors.

    Here’s a website call Color Combos where you can find the best color combination for your website template or blog theme design. There are lots of color combination available to choose in this site. If you’re not so convincing or satisfied with the color combination listed, there are 2 other tools that you can use to check it out. You can use the Combo Tester available which allows user to see different color combination and how the colors work together on the screen. If you’re not satisfied with the color combination listed, perhaps you can check out the Combo library too. There are hundreds of color swatches along with color hex values.

    I think this website is good for those trying to get a list or combination of colors for their website template or blog theme design. Finding the right combination of color is not an easy work. It really does take time to try out each and every combination available to find the best comfortable acceptable display.

Grand Barista Championship

It should be interesting to witness the Grand Barista Championship. I just wanted to get a taste of those coffees. Perhaps the only way to do that is to become one of the judges. Well, I’m particularly into the skill to make a fine tasty cup of coffee, a plain simple back coffee.

Coffee with Imagination

Most of us start our day with a nice cup of coffee. A cup of coffee works as well as the key to start our ignition to get us start working hard for the rest of the day. When we feel tired or sleepy in between, than a second cup of coffee will give the energy to keep on going. For most of us, I think coffee really makes our day. It stimulates our brain and triggers our brain from sleeping mode to start functioning. I suppose imagination starts when coffee kicks in.

    As for me I think I started to blog when I’m having my favorite cup of coffee. What did you do when you’re having your favorite cup of coffee?

Lack of Sleep linked to early death, really?

I just saw an article from Yahoo title Lack of sleep linked to early death: study. According to the article, people who get less than six hours sleep per night have an increase risk of dying prematurely. People who sleep more than nine hours per night also considered not healthy. Just which is better? Sleep more or sleep less? I suppose enough sleep is the best. The question is how much sleep is considered enough. If base on what is mention above, it should be around six to nine hours per day. Ideally that should be the amount of time that we should be sleeping per day. Still the world does not work that way. Sometimes we work a lot, sometimes we get sick and sometimes we don’t get to sleep because of some other reasons. I suppose the best way to decide how much we need to sleep is just listen to our body. That is why we get tired and sleepy. That is the sign or signals that out body trying to tell us that it’s time to sleep.  If we listen to our body and sleep accordingly, we get enough sleep and rest accordingly. That should keep us from early death I think.

    I think we shouldn’t be worry so much about sleeping less may cause early death. There are tons of things that can cause early death and having to sleep less might just be the lowest in the rank. We just have to live the best we can while we still can.

Interested in finding out the historical development of the vacuum coffee pot?

I found a webpage title The Historical Development of the Vacuum Coffee Pot. The site has detail explanation about coffee especially the vacuum coffee pot. There are also some pictures or drawings of the early design of vacuum coffee pot. Examples of vacuum coffee pot are Palmer’s 1786 patented coffee urn with spirit lamp, hot water jacket, and dual spigots, Petsch and Buynitzky’s 1868 coffee making apparatus, 1934 Silex patent drawing for an electric stove for vacuum coffee brewer and many more. There are lots of readings if you’re really interested in the topic of vacuum coffee pot. As for me, the drawings of the vacuum coffee pot are good enough for me. I’ll leave the reading part for you.

Car loves coffee too, I think

I stumbled upon an interesting picture where the car is powered by coffee. I’m not sure if this design works or not, but I doubt it. What if we are able to replace car petrol with coffee? What will happen? If this happens, it will be interesting. But then I for sure will not let it happen. That’s because when car is having coffee just like us, the price of coffee will shoots up. We might need to pay hundred dollars just for a cup of black coffee. Not to mention, when cars start to consume coffee, all other transportation will starts consuming it. When that day comes, cars will be having more coffee than we do. That I suppose that is a nightmare for coffee lovers.

Adding Calories to Coffee

This is for those coffee lovers who take calories a big deal. I suppose a cup of coffee per day won’t be much but than if you have lots of little calories here and there, it really does add up to a big number.

I seriously need a drink RIGHT NOW… Syphon coffee of cause

I want to try Syphon coffee. Judging from the way Syphon coffee brew, I think it’s going to be an expensive cup of coffee. This video clips looks more like a science lab than a coffee counter. I suppose the art of making a fine cup of coffee is science. Having thoughts of getting a set of that Syphon coffee science lab? Mmm… I think I’ll skip the brewing part and buy myself the drinking part.

Update yourself by learning New Words

New words are created from time to time. Do you study those new words? Or do you stop learning new words right after you left school? Well, if you’re worried about not able to keep up with the new words, here’s a website that you can check out. Word Spy keeps in touch with all the new words and posts it on their website. Once in a while you may check out Word Spy to learn all those new words. You may even subscribe to their RSS feed or just follow their twitter. As for the website, I just feel like reading an encyclopedia or a dictionary. Honestly, I couldn’t look at it for more than 5 minutes. I suppose Word Spy should consider include images to make the website looks interesting and easy to understand. Still I think the citations are the best part of the website. There is just one thing that I’m concern about. Will there be any conflict between Word Spy and Wikipedia as it seems both website might be showing the same thing. As far as blogger’s concern, which ever that makes the website interesting deserve checking again and again.

High Heels High Heels…

High heels, perhaps it’s one of the greatest design for women. High heels are design to make women look beautiful as they walk. It makes the legs look longer and pushes the hips and chest out. The higher the heels, the better looking it gets. Most women start to wear high heels after graduate from schools and enter the society working life. I suppose it has become a necessary to wear high heels to work for women.

    I did try to walk on it by wearing my mom’s high heels. I have to say, it’s not as comfortable as it seen and it’s difficult to walk. Not to mention some can even run a long distance wearing high heels. I suppose either these women are very talented in wearing high heels or they just happen to have a very good pair of high heels. Check out these girls that participate in the Stiletto Run, or the so call high heel run.

    High heel is part of a very important fashion for woman but the price of wearing it is expensive. It’s not just the money that you need to pay for a good pair of high heel, but also the price of your health. Take a look at the picture above. Wearing high heels over time can cause lots of problems to the legs. It can leads to pain and numbness in the toes, osteoarthritis, heel pain, bony growth, toes bent, Haglund’s deformity, join pain in the ball of the foot and sprained or broken ankle. So does it worth wearing high heels to look beautiful and sexy? You decide.

P/S: I think you don’t have to put on high heels all the time. You just need to find time and places where you can take it off and gives the legs some rest. I suppose you can take it off when you’re sitting in the office. Just puts them back on when you walk. A smart way to wear high heels can preserve your beauty.

Can’t afford to buy Microsoft Office, try Open Office instead as an Alternative

If you cannot afford to purchase a copy of Microsoft Office, perhaps you might consider getting a free copy of Open Office. Especially if you’re a student and trying to find alternative software that is similar with Microsoft office, than you should try and take a look at Open Office. As for today, there are more than 100,000,000 downloads since version 3.0 of the software releases. Open Office is actually an open source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and many more. Open Office also available in many languages and works on all common computers. Basically it’s user friendly. The reason that I get to know about Open Office is that I was actually looking for software that enable me to read and write .pdf file. I’m actually searching for alternative software other than Adobe Acrobat. I’m trying to make my own eBook and that’s how I found Open Office. I suppose Open Office works for most people as the software performs similar to both Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Take a look at Open Office and I think you'll like it.

Secret’s Safe, really?

I happened to stumble upon a site call Secret’s Safe. It’s kind of interesting because it’s about secrets. Well, kind of. What you do at Secret’s Safe is that you enter your secret and in return you’ll see someone else secret. Sounds interesting? This is actually a simple game that plays around with the desire to know other’s secret. Everybody has secrets. Sometimes it might be good to just let it out. It’s like the story of a man shouting at the tree hole in the woods, remember the story?

P/S: Try not to reveal too much when you try this game. Keep it anonymous and don’t put in any personal identification. Who knows your secret might be reveal to the one person that you don’t want to share.

The world of caffeine

I think most of us started to consume caffeine right when we were young. When we were young, we drink coke or other soft drinks. Those already give us the kick to keep on consuming it. When we get older and started to work, coffee comes into our life. Some of us even get to know coffee earlier when being a book worm in order to get a better job, better life. No matter what, caffeine has becomes part of our life anywhere, any time. At some point caffeine helps get through life. Coffee helps to complete our work and soft drinks help to keep kids happy and sit still.

    Still caffeine is considered as a stimulant drug. Over consuming is not a good idea. Here’s a chart that I stumble upon that might help you to control coffee or soft drink consumption.

P/S: I never knew that September 29th is National Coffee day. I suppose we could celebrate that day by having 1 extra cup of coffee. It should be fine doing it once a year.

Old Wooden House in the middle of a City

When you walk down the streets of a city, any city… Did you ever encounter an old wooden house that situated right between the buildings? Something like the picture above? Perhaps that is what we call a historical property. Sounds cool? Maybe so for tourists or people that walks by. It’s more like a discovery of an ancient treasure in the modern area.

    Still a house is still a house. The only thing that matters is the people who used to stay in it, especially an old house. Don’t be surprise that some of the old house used to be a place where famous people are born. Each house has a story to tell. A story related to people, the surrounding or should I say a witness or evidence of things that happen before. We used to hear people mention “I used to play around that house when I was young…” and some might even say “I built that house 30 years ago…”

    If you’re staying in an old house like that, there comes a time that you need to fix it or even abandon it because of safety purposes. The decision normally depends on how life turns out. If you have kids and they have grown up having their own job, they might not be staying in the same old house. They might have their own new house. The question is do the old parents continue to stay in the old house or do they move to stay with their children in the new house. In most cases, the old folks will move to stay with their children and sell the old house. No doubt new house is nice to stay and more comfortable with air conditioner and other new living features. Still I think most old folks are more comfortable staying in the old house where they spend half of their life there. Perhaps this is what we call the sense of belonging.

Turn off your lights at 830pm Saturday 27 March 2010 for Earth Hour 2010

Earth hour started back in 2007 Sydney, Australia and this is the 4th time that we turn off the lights for the sake of earth. Is this a difficult thing to do? I don’t think so. Is this worth doing it? Yes, definitely. All we have to do is just stand up from the comfort of our sofa and walk to the switch and turn off the lights.

    The purpose of Earth Hour is to raise the awareness of climate change among people. Lately I’m sure everybody knows about the snow and the earth quake that strikes several countries around the world. You might say that these natural disasters won’t get to you as you’re staying in a country that free from snow and earth quake, but still there are certain things that you might notice. The changes are small but still we are able to notice the difference. For those that are staying in hot tropical area. Do you sense that it’s getting hotter every year? For those that are staying in cold winter area. Do you sense that it’s getting colder every year?

    For me I’m very sure that the weather is getting hotter. I used to be able walk under the sun without feeling much heat, but lately the sun is just burning my skin. The hot air that blows towards my body is just unbearable. For those particular hot days, all I can do is just stay in my house. Honestly I really do not enjoy it.

    I don’t know much about how to stop this climate change, but I can definitely spread the words about this. Hopefully those that knows what to do, that is if they really know what they are doing, can take action. I suppose this goes to everybody that lives in this planet.
